The Victoria Derby is a Group 1 horse race run at Flemington Racecourse over 2500 metres for 3 year olds under Set Weights conditions.
Many Derby winners have gone on to success in the Melbourne Cup including LANTERN (1864), BRISEIS (1876). CHESTER (1877). GRAND FLANEUR (1880). NEWHAVEN (1896), MERRIWEE (1899). POSEIDON (1906) won 19 races including the AJC Derby and two Caulfield Cups (1906,07), PRINCE FOOTE (1909), PATROBAS (1915), TRIVALVE (1927). PHAR LAP (1929), HALL MARK (1933), SKIPTON (1941), COMIC COURT (1948). DELTA (1949) and EFFICIENT (2006).
Other notable winners include filly ROSE OF MAY (1855), who won the first running.
Due to a change in the programming date FIREWORKS (1867, 68) created a record unlikely to be matched by winning the Victoria Derby twice.
Also doubtful to be equalled is New Zealander MARTINI-HENRY (1883), who won the Victoria Derby on debut and the Melbourne Cup at his second start three days later.
WALLACE (1895) was the best-performed Australian son of Carbine and a leading stallion; FRANCES TRESSADY (1923) took out the Victoria Derby—VRC Oaks double; HYDROGEN (1951); SAILOR’S GUIDE (1955) had 18 wins including the Sydney Cup (1956) and the Washington DC International, where he defeated Arc winner Bally- moss; TULLOCH (1957): SKY HIGH (1960); and CRAFTSMAN (1963).
TOBIN BRONZE (1965) was a dual Cox Plate winner (1966,67) and also won the CF Orr Stakes, Doncaster Hep, All Aged Stakes, Toorak Hep and the Caulfield Cup in 1967 among his 28 race wins; DULCIFY (1978): BIG PRINT (1979) caused a boil over when he defeated Kingston Town; SOVEREIGN RED (1980); GROSVENOR (1982): RED ANCHOR (1984) swept the Caulfield Guineas,
Cox Plate and the Derby; MAHOGANY (1993); ELVSTROEM (2003) won the Caulfield Cup (2004) and the Dubai Duty Free (2005); and Clare Lindop became the first female rider to win on REBEL RAIDER (2008).
