Run at Flemington racecourse during the VRC Autumn Carnival, The Newmarket Handicap is a Group 1 sprinting race that has seen some of the best sprinters ever in Australia win it.

Dual winners of the Newmarket Handicap include ASPEN (1880, 81); GOTHIC (1927, 28) won the Caulfield Stakes, Futurity Stakes, Mackinnon Stakes, Linlithgow Stakes (1928), CF Orr Stakes,William Reid Stakes (1929); AURIE’S STAR (1937, 39) also won the Lightning Stakes twice (1937, 39); CORRECT (1960, 61); and RAZOR SHARP (1982, 83).

Other notable winners include MALUA (1884): LOCHIEL (1887) won the Auckland Cup (1888), Australian Cup (1889); WAKEFUL (1901); and notorious rogue beginner HEROIC (1926), who could win at any distance when he got away within sight of the field. His 21 victories included the ATC Australian Derby, Caulfield Guineas, Champagne Stakes, Ascot Vale Stakes (1924), Caulfield Stakes (1925), Underwood Stakes, Cox Plate (1926),William Reid Stakes (1927). He also sired champion AJAX (1938).

WALTZING LILY (1933) won the William Reid Stakes (1933), Futurity Stakes (1934); BERNBOROUGH (1946): ROYAL GEM (1948) won 23 of 51 including the Caulfield Guineas, Cantala Stakes (1945), Goodwood Hcp,Toorak Hep and Caulfield Cup (1946): MANIHI (1968) sire of Manikato; BAGUETTE (1971) followed his triumph in the 2YO Triple Crown the previous year; CENTURY (1973) won the Lightning Stakes (1974); and TOY SHOW (1976) also won the Golden Slipper, ATC Sires’ Produce, Thousand Guineas (1975) and William Reid Stakes (1977).

MAYBE MAHAL (1978). PLACID ARK (1987). SPECIAL (1988) followed up her win in the Lightning Stakes, SHAFTESBURY AVENUE (1991). SCHILLACI (1992). GENERAL NEDIYM (1998) won the Lightning Stakes, BELLE DE JOUR (2003) won the Golden Slipper, EXCEED AND EXCEL (2004). ALINGHI (2005). TAKEOVER TARGET (2006), MISS ANDRETTI (2007). WEEKEND HUSSLER (2008). SCENIC BLAST (2009), BLACK CAVIAR (2011) and HAY LIST (2012) earlier won the Manikato Stakes (2010) and the All Aged Stakes (2011).
