In 2017 known as the TAB Multiplier stakes, the registered name for the race is the Linlithgow stakes but the name changes as the race gains new sponsors.

The race has Group 2 status. The race is over a distance of 1200 metres held annually at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne during the VRC Spring Racing Carnival

Five horses have been successful three times in the race: BARBELLE (1870-72); SCAMANDA (1876-78); and AMOUNIS (1926, 27, 29). who had 33 wins including the Epsom (1925, 28) and Cantala Stakes (1926, 29) twice, Rosehill Guineas (1925), Chipping Norton Stakes, Cox Plate (1927), Futurity Stakes, St George Stakes, All Aged Stakes, Caulfield Stakes and Caulfield Cup (1930).

Amounis defeated Phar Lap by a short head in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes of 1930.

CHATHAM (1931-33) was a dual winner of the Cox Plate (1932, 34) and Epsom Hep (1932,33), and also won the Caulfield Stakes (1933), All Aged Stakes and Doncaster Hep (1934) carrying lOst 41b (65.5kg); and HIGH CASTE (1939-41) dead heated in 1939 then won the next two editions.

Dual winners include CARBINE (1888, 89), WOLAROI (1916, 18). THE NIGHT PATROL (1924, 25). AJAX (1937, 38). MATRICE (1956,57). ALL SHOT (1972, 73). REDELVA (1988, 90) and BLACK CAVIAR (2010, 11).

Other notable winners include COLUMNIST (1947). who won the Caulfield Cup: WIGGLE (1958) won the Caulfield Guineas, Stradbroke Hep (1958); NOHOLME (1959) also won the Champagne Stakes, Epsom Hep, All Aged Stakes and Cox Plate that year; SKY HIGH (1962); STAR AFFAIR (1965) won the Ascot Vale Stakes, Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate in 1965; ROYAL GEM (1945): WENONA GIRL (1963); VAIN (1969); PLACID ARK (1987): MAHOGANY (1996): CHOISIR (2002): FASTNET ROCK (2004); and MISS ANDRETTI (2007).
