Acknowledged as a sire-making race, the Caulfield Guineas is one of Australia's top contests for 3YO horses.

Regarded as one of the blue riband events for three-year-olds, the Caulfield Guineas is regarded as a stallion making race for the winner, and has been won by a host of star gallopers who gave gone on to multiple Group 1 successes.

The Caulfield Guineas attracts some of the best colts, geldings, and fillies who are performers over the mile.

Some winners have gone on to win the Melbourne Cup.

First won by WHEATEAR (1881), prominent winners include WALLACE (1895): SWEET NELL (1903); PATROBAS (1915) won the Melbourne Cup, as did ARTILLERYMAN (1919); HEROIC (1924);AJAX (1937): HIGH CASTE (1939): HYDROGEN (1951): TULLOCH (1957): WIGGLE (1958); STAR AFFAIR (1965): VAIN (1969); SURROUND (1976); MANIKATO (1978); RED ANCHOR (1984); MAHOGANY (1993): LONHRO (2001); and WEEKEND HUSSLER (2007).

AUTONOMY (1892) won the ATC Sires’ Produce, Champagne Stakes and Mackinnon Stakes (1892); DUAL CHOICE (1970) won the Lightning Stakes (1971), was dual winner of the Oakleigh Plate (1971, 72) and took out the William Reid Stakes (1972); LUSKIN STAR (1977) won 13 of 17 including the 2yo Triple Crown, QTC Sires’ Produce
(1977) and The Galaxy (1978).

SOVEREIGN RED (1980) took out the Victoria Derby, WATC Australian Derby, Kingston Town Classic (1980) and Doomben 10,000 (1981)

REDOUTE’S CHOICE (1999) won the Blue Diamond Stakes, Manikato Stakes (1999) and CF Orr Stakes (2000), and was leading sire in Australia; and STARSPANGLED BANNER (2009) won the Oakleigh Plate, Diamond Jubilee Stakes and July Cup (2010).
